You’ll also learn about the establishment of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras — one of the world’s biggest parties — back in 1978!

You’ll meet your guide and fellow guests at the historic Hyde Park Barracks on the eastern edge of the city, before heading off on foot through Hyde Park towards Oxford Street in Darlinghurst — renowned as the epicentre of gay life in Sydney. Along the way your guide will recount the fascinating stories of key gay and lesbian figures from Sydney’s history, including a governor, and even a gay bushranger — who was hanged at Darlinghurst Gaol.

Today, Mardi Gras is one of the biggest and most spectacular events on the Sydney calendar.
