‘At Sovereign Hill you are suddenly and miraculously transported back to the Gold Rush in the year 1851. Fortunes were created and a new era of wealth commenced in Australia. The Gold Museum was inaugurated in 1978. The township, the snow falling, the music, soldiers firing muskets and the costumes of people walking around make you feel that you are really living in a bygone era. It is an amazing and marvellous creation. My advice to those who have not been there – it is a must if you are holidaying in Australia.’

We had an excellent tour guide Richard who shared lots of history about Ballarat and the gold rush story. It was so interesting ! The only thing I disappointed about was we were told to wait at our hotel at 7am. Then there was a shuttle picked us up and dropped us at Federation Square. We had to line up and wait for our shuttle. The wait was at least an hour. With two young boys it was quite a nightmare. But anyway, we enjoyed the trip.

I was really surprised by Sovereign Hill. It is indescribable. It’s impossible to summarise everything we did there. It is like living a day back in 1850. Everything is perfectly recreated or preserved and in operation. The children who are seen at school are school children who spend three days there living like they did back then. We also visited the Gold Museum, which was fantastic!

A good way to get a view of how things were back in the 1850s. The site, as the name says, is on a hillside, so not recommended for the out of shape. Was disappointed in the paid mine tour, as it didn't really show too much.

What You Can Expect

The Victorian Gold Rush of the 1850s transformed Melbourne into an incredibly wealthy city and gave rise to many regional centres, including Ballarat — the scene of the famous Eureka Rebellion in 1854. Learn more about this fascinating chapter in Victoria’s history on this Sovereign Hill and Ballarat Wildlife Park Tour from Melbourne. You’ll spend time exploring the fascinating Sovereign Hill open air museum and heritage town recreation in Ballarat, before heading off to the renowned Ballarat Wildlife Park Tour to meet the furry and feathered inhabitants.

Once CBD hotel pick-ups are completed, you’ll travel out of town in air-conditioned comfort for the 90-minute trip to Ballarat. The route will take you through lush farmland and small country towns that dot the picturesque Victorian landscape. On arrival in the elegant Victorian city, you’ll enjoy a drive through town to admire the fine period architecture.

Next you’ll head to Sovereign Hill to experience life as it was during the gold rush era. Sovereign Hill is a living outdoor museum, with working exhibits brought to life by costumed characters. Explore the goldfields town at your leisure. You’ll see shops, hotels, a theatre, schools, factories and of course — gold diggings. You’ll even have the opportunity to pan for gold yourself at the Red Hill Gully Diggings. If you’re lucky enough to strike it rich, the gold is all yours!

One of the many highlights of the day is the Red Hill Mine Tour, which takes you underground to experience what life was like for those seeking to strike it lucky on the goldfields. The Gold Museum’s gold pour demonstration is also well worth seeing.

Lunch on this Sovereign Hill Tour from Melbourne is at your own cost and there are plenty of options. Try a delicious Cornish pastie at the traditional bakery on the main street or head for the modern bistro. There’s even a period tavern!

Street theatre and live action performances are a big part of this Sovereign Hill and Ballarat Wildlife Park Tour from Melbourne. You’ll see the Redcoats march through town in the afternoon and demonstrate their musket fire power. It was their job to keep the rebellious and unruly miners in line!

Later in the day you’ll depart Sovereign Hill for the short drive to Ballarat Wildlife Park to meet the many resident native Australian animals. You’ll have the chance to hand feed kangaroos, wallabies and emus, and come face to face with some of the country’s more infamous locals — including several species of snake and even crocodiles!

The tour arrives back in the Melbourne CBD at around 5.30pm. This Sovereign Hill and Ballarat Wildlife Park Tour from Melbourne combines history, sightseeing and amazing wildlife. It’s a top day out!
