‘Just wanted to say a huge thank you to San who lead us on a really interesting walk yesterday and gave us an insight into the history and architecture of many Melbourne buildings. San was very flexible with the tour, going out of his way to take us down several alleys and describing other buildings we showed an interest in that weren’t built in the Art Deco style. The tour was well designed. Not too long or too far to walk. Very enjoyable. Thank you.’

We took this Arte Deco tour and for the first time we saw some real gems of Melbourne's Arte Deco architecture that we'd previously walked right by and never really 'seen'. Our guide John was very knowledgeable and interesting, without overloading us with irrelevant detail. A fascinating, enjoyable and interesting eye-opener! Highly recommended!

John, our tour guide, was incredibly knowledgeable and informative. We kept to time, without feeling rushed and John was able to answer any questions that I had. As a Melbourne native, I was surprised at just how much I didn't know with regard to our Art Deco buildings and heritage. Would highly recommend. Thanks John!

  • What You Can Expect

This Melbourne Art Deco Walking Tour begins at the wonderful Manchester Unity Building on the corner of Collins and Swanston Streets in the CBD. It’s one of the city’s best examples of Art Deco architecture, and your knowledgeable guide will share details about its design and construction.

From there, you’ll set off on foot at a leisurely pace to see a number of buildings from the Art Deco period and learn how Melbourne’s centenary in 1934 gave rise to the construction of these architectural gems.

The tour takes in the most famous Art Deco edifices in the city — such as the celebrated Nicholas and T & G Buildings — along with plenty of lesser known examples as well. Your guide will point out each building’s unique features, and where possible you’ll get a glimpse inside. The Cathedral Arcade at the Nicholas Building is a highlight.

This Melbourne Art Deco Walking Tour is a fascinating two hours — and a fabulous introduction to the Victorian capital for anyone with an interest in history or design.
