‘As an avid Underbelly fan, this tour was right up my alley! Our tour guide Kathryn was so well versed in the history of Kings Cross. She gave historic insights, as well as her own memories of the area. I thought I knew a lot about the Cross, but there was so much I didn’t know – dating all the way back to the first settlers. It was a truely fascinating evening and I enjoyed the drink at the end.’

Our guide Kathryn lives in the area and is keen to promote King's Cross. She gave us interesting facts, her opinions on local issues and opportunities for photos as well as being thoughtful of our needs. Normally I would not wander the streets of King's Cross after dark and this tour gave the opportunity to see one aspect of Australian life while still feeling safe. The incidental aspects of the tour added to our experience. We saw an older prostitute proposition a young man. Our guide explained that this was unusual as it is dangerous on the streets and most prostitutes work in brothels. We saw the muttering, drug-affected hobo and we were advised "Don't make eye contact". Our guide knew the young man with schizophrenia who was begging to raise the $20 needed for a bed that night. She inquired after his health and gave him all the loose change that she had. As we walked away Kathryn explained the local issue of mental illness and homelessness. I found this tour a most interesting and thought-provoking experience that I would recommend to all.

We live in Sydney and wanted to do something cool with our 3 teenage children during school holidays. After a thorough research and reading all the awesome reviews mentioning wonderful guides John and Kathryn and Phillip, we chose this tour. It was a miserable cold and rainy day, but we decided to stick to the plan and be adventurous anyway. On arrival, we were quietly greeted by our guide Rafael (no mention of this guide in any reviews)... that was the first clue that our tour was not going to be what was expected. The guide warned before we started that the tour was going to be shortened as the weather was terrible. Rafael spoke softly and often whilst turned away from the group, lacked any kind of passion for the subject, he stated some facts, the knowledge he shared was very superficial, minimal and the way it was delivered was simply boring. We actually couldn’t bear it for the entire duration and left 30 min early. This was a very disappointing experience. It’s no secret that a guide can make or break any tour, this was potentially a very interesting and fun tour, but ended up being a dreadfully boring waste of time and money.

I really loved the evening walking tour in Kings Cross area with John. A lot of quirky and interesting stories on the history of this vibrant place, now safe and full of trendy eateries and beautiful deli places. Yum!

Kathryn took my friends and I on a very intriguing and adventurous walk around Kings Cross to learn about the history and happenings of the area. Kathryn was a true gem of a guide and kept us all enthralled with tid bit information of the area that we didn't know as locals. When guests visit, I'll definitely offer this up as an option to do off the tourist beaten path.

A most wonderful evening spent with John. His passion and knowledge of Sydney and Kings Cross was inspirational. Traipsing the back streets and hearing stories better than any history book!

What You Can Expect

Take a two-hour walk on the wild side during this fabulous Kings Cross Walking Tour in Sydney’s inner-east. For most visitors to Sydney, the Cross has been a ‘no-go’ zone, but this tour reveals a different side to one of Australia’s most maligned neighbourhoods. You’ll hear tales of crime and intrigue, but also of deep passion and romance. It’s an evening like no other in the Harbour City!

The tour begins beneath the Cross’ most famous landmark — the giant Coca Cola sign at the top of Darlinghurst Road. From there, you’ll head off down leafy Victoria Street to see the former home of 1970s social activist and heiress Juanita Neilsen, whose disappearance is one of the most notorious unsolved crimes in the country’s history.

As the tour continues, your expert local guide will introduce you to a host of colourful characters who shaped the urban landscape you see around you. Names like Tilly Devine, Abe Saffron and Donny ‘the Glove’ Smith roll off the tongue and are brought to life though your guide’s narrative. You’ll also hear insights about the precinct’s celebrated architecture and learn how the Cross morphed from Easy Street into Skid Row over the course of the early 20th century.

At the end of your Kings Cross Walking Tour you’ll enjoy a drink with your guide and group at a local watering hole. Who knows which modern local characters of the Cross you may meet!

If you want to see a different, darker side of Sydney — this Kings Cross Walking Tour is for you.
