We travelled to Katherine on board a spotlessly clean bus, with probably one of the most entertaining and accommodating drivers/guides we have had the pleasure of meeting. He provided informed anecdotes about different areas we visited and suggested books to enhance our experience. It made the long drive much more enjoyable. Lunch was delicious, and the gorge cruise was conducted by a very knowledgeable local guide with a gentle sense of humour. Edith Falls was relaxing and picturesque. Overall this was an excellent excursion.

  • What You Can Expect

This fabulous Katherine Day Tour from Darwin offers the chance to immerse yourself in the exquisite beauty of Nitmiluk Gorge — undoubtedly one of the most spectacular natural landscapes to be found anywhere in Australia. You’ll enjoy a two-hour cruise through Nitmiluk with an Indigenous guide and learn the gorge’s significance to the First People. This is a day of discovery unlike any other!

The tour departs from the city at around 6.30am and heads south down the epic Stuart Highway. You’ll travel through a variety of landscapes and enjoy informative commentary on points of interest along the way from your guide. There’s a brief stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, which has an important history as a burial site for World War II soldiers.

On arrival in Nitmiluk National Park, your first port of call is stunning Edith Falls. Here you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing swim (conditions permitting). A delicious picnic lunch is served in this tranquil setting.

From there, it’s on to Nitmiluk Gorge for a two-hour scenic cruise on the river that flows between the soaring gorge walls. Once known as Katherine Gorge, Nitmiluk is actually a series of twelve gorges. You’ll visit gorges one and two on the cruise, with a short 400-metre walk in between (optional). Along the way, you’ll learn about the significance of the gorge to the traditional owners — the Jawoyn people — from your local Indigenous guide.

There’s time for a tour of the township of Katherine by bus, before you head for home via Pine Creek — an atmospheric gold mining town. You’ll make a short stop en route to purchase dinner (own expense) before arriving back in Darwin at around 8.30pm.

This Katherine Day Tour from Darwin is an experience that will stay with you long after your Top End holiday comes to an end.
