Wear your hippest sneakers on this walking tour. Chippendale and Redfern are both buzzy, up-and-coming precincts with a lively mix of art, history, architecture and culture. Anabel, our guide, was entertaining and super knowledgeable about everything we saw. This was my old stomping ground as a student and I still learned something new. Great coffee, too. I highly recommend this one.

I love a good walking tour, and this was one of the best. Greg was knowledgable and lovely. I especially loved his knowledge of local politics.

Four of us met our tour guide, Greg, in the foyer of the Old Clare Hotel in Chippendale. Right from the start he had us immersed in the history of this interesting area. We toured around the hotel itself and then moved out into the surrounding laneways, which used to be a sectioned-off area associated with the brewery. The way the area has been redeveloped and revitalised is amazing. We stopped off at the White Rabbit gallery to see an exhibition by Chinese artists - not really my bag, so Greg and I had a pot of Princess flower tea in the cafe and chatted while we waited for the others. Greg showed us a lot of the amazing street art in the area and we visited another gallery showcasing emerging artists. More architecture and then on to Redfern, where we learnt about the history of the indigenous people in the area and the controversy surrounding new developments going in. Greg's local insight was invaluable and the whole tour was fascinating and entertaining. Our tour also included a tea or coffee, which was welcome, and a funky calico bag. I'd thoroughly recommend this tour for anyone interested in history, architecture and indigenous issues (all three for me!) and it's a great way to spend a few hours on a Saturday.

My daughter and I had so much fun on this tour and got to know a cool part of Sydney! I don’t know if otherwise we would have seen it. To see it through the eyes of Greg who was clearly passionate about a neighborhood he calls home. We began at the Old Clare hotel which in itself is a really interesting place with great history. I encourage you to take this tour. You will love it if you want to get to know another part of Sydney!

What You Can Expect

This relaxed Chippendale and Redfern Walking Tour will get you out of the Sydney CBD and into a vibrant part of the inner-city that most visitors miss entirely! You’ll explore the rapidly gentrifying suburb of Chippendale, and discover its flourishing contemporary art, architecture and culinary scenes. Next stop is Redfern — a suburb that has played a key role in the Sydney Indigenous community’s struggle for recognition over the past century.

You’ll meet your friendly guide and the rest of your small group of guests at The Old Clare Hotel in Chippendale. This upscale boutique hotel sits in the heart of what was once a brewery precinct, and a ‘no-go’ zone for law-abiding, respectable Sydney citizens. How times have changed! Your friendly and knowledgeable guide will lead you through the maze of small streets packed with cafes, bars and multicultural eateries, pointing out the fusion of heritage and modern architecture that defines this suburn in the 21st century.

Today Chippendale is also home to an eclectic mix of contemporary art galleries and quirky boutiques. You’ll stop at various points of interest, and recharge with a coffee stop before heading on to Redfern.

Here you’ll see the incredible street murals that depict the stories and struggles of Sydney’s Indigenous people since European settlement. The suburb is still home to a strong Indigenous community. Your guide will also introduce you to a host of hidden creative studios and design spaces.

This fun and culturally-informative Chippendale and Redfern Walking Tour will take you off the beaten tourist track and provide you with a very different perspective of the Harbour City and its fast evolving inner suburbs.
