‘The tour was so well put together and right from the moment we met Kurt, our tour guide, I was able to relax and sit back and enjoy the day. Being winter, Sovereign Hill was so beautiful. The light show is spectacular and makes for a wonderful memory. The guided tour brings the 1850s to life. All in all it was a day well spent. Thanks for an amazing experience.’ Priya

What you can expect

This Sovereign Hill and Daylesford Tour from Melbourne offers a great day out for the whole family and an opportunity to immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the Victorian gold rush of the 19th century. This boom-time era gave rise to many of Melbourne’s fabulous period buildings, along with heritage cities and towns across the goldfields — including Ballarat and picturesque Daylesford.

The day begins with pick-up from selected CBD hotels, and a departure of 8.30 or 11am or depending on the season. The tour heads west from the city towards Ballarat and your first stop of the day – Sovereign Hill. This outdoor museum and gold rush town re-creation tells the story of Ballarat’s first ten years following the discovery of gold in the region in 1851. The legendary Eureka Stockade rebellion occurred right here. You’ll learn more about that during your visit, and experience exciting street theatre, live music and the chance to pan for gold. Who knows — you might even strike it lucky! [More]

You’ll be greeted by Mr Smith — your personal Sovereign Hill guide — who will take you on his ’rags to riches’ journey from the seedy streets of old London town to becoming one of the goldfields most successful gents. You’ll also venture deep underground on a guided mine tour and take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. Guests of all ages will love the entire experience.

The second stop on this Sovereign Hill and Daylesford Tour from Melbourne is the quaint town of Daylesford, located in the heart of Victoria’s spa country. The region is renowned for its revitalising hot springs and has been a popular weekend getaway destination for stressed Melburnians for more than a century. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the main street, which is packed with heritage buildings, galleries, cafes and restaurants.

Please note: In winter this Sovereign Hill and Daylesford Tour from Melbourne operates in reverse, and with a later departure time, so that guests can enjoy Sovereign Hill’s Winter Wonderlights display.

The tour was so well put together and right from the moment we met Kurt, our tour guide, I was able to relax and sit back and enjoy the day. He was so thorough, clear, humorous and assuring and was a key to the entire experience. Thanks Kurt. Being winter and the occasion of White Christmas, Sovereign Hill was so beautiful with Christmas lights. The light show is spectacular and makes for a wonderful memory. The guided tour and the show about finding gold bring the 1850s alive. All in all it was a day well spent, entertaining kids and adults alike. Thanks for an amazing experience.

Exciting day for us. Did something we never done before - pan for gold!!! Good experience indeed. Tour is really good value for money. Our tour guide Robert was awesome too. Funny and cute! Thanks for the great tour.

We met our driver at pickup point. Kylie was very friendly and informative. We took a scenic way instead of the freeway through Bachus Marsh to Sovereign Hill which was lovely. Once at Sovereign Hill everything was organised and ready for us to take a tour with Malcolm who was a very informative chap. We were then left to our own to explore. A little more time would have been nice to see everything this place has to offer but our time did not allow this. We then went to Daylesford to see a waterfall and get some mineral spring water, before heading off to Trentham.
