‘This tour was so much fun! Ken was a great guide. His knowledge of Melbourne’s history was flawless and he was friendly and approachable. The spirit rods added an extra level of spookiness. His outfit was perfect and really set the scene. We will definitely be checking out the other tours available. Thanks for a great night!’ Katie

What you can expect
Enjoy a spooky journey into the Victorian capital’s fascinating past on this Old Melbourne Ghost Tour. You’ll enjoy a guided walk with a master storyteller, and an optional dinner beforehand at what is said to be the city’s most haunted pub! From ghostly opera singers to turn-of-the-century opium dens, this tour reveals Melbourne’s eeriest side. You have been warned!
For those who choose the combined dinner and tour option (highly recommended), your evening meal is booked for two hours prior to the start of the tour. Please make your own way to Young & Jackson Hotel (opposite Flinders Street Station) and enjoy a main course, dessert, coffee and one included local beer, house wine or non-alcoholic drink in the atmospheric surroundings of Melbourne’s most famous pub. The first floor is home to another Melbourne icon — Chloe — painted by Jules Joseph Lefebvre in Paris in 1875. The young model is said to have committed suicide over unrequited love for Lefebvre. The 2.6-metre-high nude has hung in the hotel since 1909. [More]
After dinner, you’ll need to make your own way to the tour meeting point (two-minutes’ walk). Please arrive a few minutes ahead of the scheduled meeting time.
You’ll meet your very entertaining local guide and the rest of your small group of ghost busters at Federation Square and head off on a leisurely stroll around the history-laden cobbled streets of Old Melbourne. Along the way you’ll enjoy highly informative commentary and learn fascinating facts about the city’s history.
This tour offers a bit of everything — from the death of 19th century opera singer Federici on stage at the Princess Theatre (for decades a seat was kept free for his ghost at every opening night!) to ghoulish revelations of Melbourne’s poverty-stricken peasants selling their dead loved ones to body snatchers for medical experiments. Let’s not forget the city’s opium addiction or its many miscreants that were sent to the gallows protesting their innocence to the bitter end.
You’ll never look at Melbourne the same way again after you’ve encountered its dark and disturbing past. This Old Melbourne Ghost Tour is fabulously phantasmal fun!
