Featured guest review:

‘We bought the one-day pass, but in hindsight, we should have gone with the two-day pass as once you hop off a couple of times, the day is gone – and there are two tours included in the ticket price (city and St Kilda). If you plan to visit any of the sights, such as the MCG, it’s worth buying the combo ticket as you save about $10. Siting upstairs is great for the views, but it can be hard to hear the commentary because of the noise of the bus.’ Georgematthews

We took 30 people from our club on the bus yesterday and they thoroughly enjoyed the trip. So much so, that they want to do the St Kilda tour next year. So we will see you again!

We purchased the 48 hour ticket and were glad we did. The bus was new, clean and nicely configured with the open top. We took both the red and black line tours and saw a good part of the city, which is what we like to do to get an overview of a place we're visiting.

Nice trip around the city. Very hot day 40+ so nice to be offered cold water bottles and ice. Thanks friendly bus drivers.

When in Melbourne we decided to go on the Hop on Hop off bus tour. The tour lasdts around 90 mins however you can get on and off at all the popular locations. We got on at the start (Gibson Street) and stayed until Quen Victoria Market where we got off, had a walk around and some lunch. Got back on and continued the tour back to Gibson Street. Seen some great sights that we would have struggled to get to on foot and thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The guide was very informative.

The bus company was actually alright. Staff were nice and the bus was OK. We tried to do both circuits in one day just to get a feeling for the city but our 'get a quick look around' plan didn’t work out due to the absolutely awful traffic. The first route down to St. Kilda was alright, but then we tried to do the city tour in the afternoon and that was terrible. We thought Sydney had congested traffic, but Melbourne doesn’t have it much better. The traffic is of course neither the driver’s, nor the salespeople’s fault, maybe not even the fault of the management or whoever sets up the timetable. However, some legs of the tour taking twice as much as it said on the timetable was definitely an issue that ruined our experience. At one place, between stops 4 and 6 I believe, we spent about an hour in traffic sitting in front of various construction sites. We were pretty much fuming around stop 8 and decided to get off the bus and just walk to where we wanted to go. We bought a 48-hour pass, but today we’re going to skip the bus completely.

Wherever we go in the world, we always use the HO-HO bus tour if it’s available, to familiarise ourselves with the city. The Melbourne tour was OK, but we felt that it was a bit padded out with areas that weren't of any great interest – in particular the modern towers of the Docklands area and the expanse of dullness to the northwest of the city centre. On the plus side, the trip out to St Kilda was good and its worth taking time to enjoy both the beach and the myriad of restaurants and cake shops along the main street. So the bus was ok, but maybe take it for 24 hours max.
