What you can expect
This Melbourne Art Deco Walking Tour begins in the city centre, where you’ll meet your expert guide Robin Grow – author of the award-winning book Melbourne Art Deco. Here you’ll see the wonderful Manchester Unity building on the corner of Collins and Swanston Street – one of the city’s best examples of Art Deco architecture.
Accompanied by Robin’s fascinating commentary, your Melbourne Art Deco Walking Tour group will visit a number of buildings from the period around the CBD, and learn how Melbourne’s centenary in 1934 gave the city the impetus to sustain a six-year building boom that transformed the urban landscape.
While exploring some of the most famous Art Deco buildings in the city, including the celebrated Majorca building, Robin will explain their unique features (such as the self-cleaning terracotta tiles) and the origins of the highly distinctive geometric patterning.
Throughout this Melbourne Art Deco Walking Tour you’ll compare the design styles of various buildings from the period, and learn how many of Art Deco’s design elements were actually derived from ancient cultures!
